Fostering Literacy Through Art Introductory Workshop
This
two- or three-day introductory workshop will introduce teachers
experientially to the dynamic relationship between art and writing.
As participants are guided through a carefully designed progression
of art-and-literature based writing mini-lessons, they will come
to understand how the language of words and the language of pictures
enhance each other. Teachers will learn how to create simple crayon
resist paintings that will be used to inspire descriptivepassages,
poetry, and stories. They will also learn how to access rich descriptive
language as they explore key literary elements in poetry and prose.

Picturing
Writing is ideal for inspiring budding young writers as well as
for reaching students of all ages who are more visually or kinesthetically
inclined. Picturing Writing: Fostering Literacy Through Art can
be taken by itself or as a precursor to either Picturing
Writing: Integrated Curriculum Workshop or Image-Making
Within The Writing Process. This workshop also provides
an excellent follow-up for teachers who have already taken the Image-Making
workshop.
